FG to begin spending of $321m Abacha loot from next month


The Federal Government will commence Spending money from the $321m loot retrieved from Switzerland next month.

The money stolen by the late military dictator, Gen. Sani Abacha will supposedly be used to fund the Social Investment Programme of the government.

The SA to the President on Social Investment, Mrs. Maryam Uwais, announced this in Abuja on Thursday at a forum on asset recovery organised by the Swiss Embassy in collaboration with the African Network for Environment and Economic Justice.

Abacha loot spending would be monitored by the World Bank.

She also said the Federal Government and the World Bank enterd into an agreement to use the money to fund the Social Investment Programme, which would give money to the poorest and most vulnerable families.

The money will be shared to: Niger, Kogi, Ekiti, Osun, Oyo, Kwara, Cross River, Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Benue, Taraba, Adamawa, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Plateau, Nasarawa, Anambra and Internally Displaced Camps (IDPs) in Borno.

N5000 will be distributed monthly.
